Special Medical Needs Shelter Training

Is your organization prepared to provide care to those with special medical needs in a disaster? Special medical needs shelter training can help your organization gain the information and guidance needed to become better prepared to do so. 
This interactive training will focus on shelter operations and staff roles and responsibilities.  The overall goal of the training is for organizations to obtain a better understanding of the context in which they may be providing medical care and monitoring assistance to shelter residents.  The training will also assist you and your organization in discovering the resources and processes that need to be in place to ensure that shelter staff will be able to accommodate special medical needs shelter residents. 
The training session is designed for individuals tasked with emergency or disaster planning for special medical needs populations from:

    • Local governments;
    • State agencies;
    • Non-profit organizations;
    • Colleges and Universities; and
    • Private industry.

After the Training Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the function of medical needs shelters
  • Understand staff responsibilities and challenges in managing and operating a shelter
  • Understand primary shelter areas
  • Understand shelter organization and operations
  • Understand the roles and expectations of shelter personnel
  • Understand the importance of a team approach

The Training will cover:

  • A brief overview of NIMS (National Incident Management System)
  • Information on the role of special medical needs shelters and how they fit in the overall emergency shelter system
  • Equipment, food, and other supplies needed to operate
  • Shelter operational functions based on ICS (Incident Command System)
  • Conduct and Confidentiality Training (as it relates to the privacy of shelter residents and their medical records)
  • Challenges of operating a special medical needs shelter
  • General requirements and expectations of shelter personnel
  • Caring for children with special medical needs
  • Diversity Training (in regards to accommodating shelter residents with disabilities)
  • De-escalation Techniques
  • Universal Precautions

Participants will receive:

  • A Virtual Tour of the Shelter;
  • Training Exercises and Activities;
  • Generalized Job Action Sheets focusing on the most critical roles (Registration, Medical Care, Security, etc.); and
  • Other specialized training tools based on the curriculum and client’s request
